The current owncloud package on a fresh Debian Sid install does not work correctly for me. Following the install instructions fails at the admin account creation page. It will not accept any combination of values input that I tested. Instead, no matter what you type, clicking submit will redirect you to yoururl.com/owncloud/index.php and clear out all values. Upon doing some checking, no config file was created, and the database was not populated/created.
My solution was to install manually instead of using the .deb package form Debian’s repository. Just follow OwnCloud’s installation instructions at http://doc.owncloud.org/server/4.5/admin_manual/installation.html#manual-installation.
*NOTE: This is for installing OwnCloud 4.5 on Debian Sid on March 9, 2013. The installation techniques may change as from those linked to, so I recommend searching for the latest instructions.
However, if, like me, you first tried the owncloud package, it may create some issues when installing manually. Make sure to uninstall the owncloud package first using
sudo apt-get purge owncloud
